Did you know...

The murderers were caught and hanged on the hill above the Punchbowl (now called Gibbet Hill) and James erected a memorial to the unknown sailor at the site of the gibbet.

The memorial is still there today on the hill above the current A3 road going round the Punchbowl and is accessible by foot (the area is National Trust land). The sailor himself was buried in Thursley churchyard, a short distance from the Stilwell tombs, with the burial paid for by subscription from local people as the identity of the sailor was never established.
